Summary |
This black leather bound Bible has the words "Oakmont School Washington Grove MD" imprinted on the cover. On the spine is printed "Holy Bible Maps." The words were probably originally printed in gold. The edges of the pages are in gold.leaf with red hues. Both covers are severely deteriorated The front title page reads: The Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments Translated Out of the Original Tongues and with The Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised. American Bible Society, Instituted in the Year 1816, New York. The blank page up front bears this dedication: Presented to The Oakmont School by Clarence and Philip Welch November 1923 "12th chapter of Romans" to every child JBW (possibly JBM?) Romans:12 is an exhortation for good living. It provides direct guidance on proper behavior such as :"....be kindly affectionate one to another with brotherly love. . . " It also stresses that one should acknowledge what one's gifts are and to use them, everyone having different gifts. |

This is the note that came with the Bible written exactly as it appeared. Joli, Here is the bible. The story is it came from the "Oakmont School" which was the original WG Elem School. When that school was torn down, the bible was given tot Mildred Fink who lived on Oakmont just across from the school. She just recently died at the age of 93. Her daughter, Pat Owens, is cleaning out her house and wanted the bible to go somewhere it would be appreciated. You can see the inscription inside date 1925. Cindy |
