Summary |
Heritage Guide to Methodist Seaside Retreat, Pacific Grove, California From the introduction: On August 8, 1875, about 450 people gathered in a collection of rough army tents, set on 30' by 60' lots and peppered with 12 to 15 cottages. The little encampment formed a community of three weeks duration and covered what is now the downtown area beween Lighthouse Ave., and the waterfront. . . . The fame of this Methodist Seaside Retreat quickly spread, and soon several religious groups and groups of "high moral note and tone" held meetings of varying length in "the Grove" to "rest and meditate" . . . . |
