Description |
Octagon Ballot Box This ballot box was designed and built by Sam DuBois in 1975. It is used to hold the cast ballots at the Town's annual elections and captures the octagonal shape of McCathran Hall, a primary historic structure that is central to the Town's activities. The ballot box is approximately 14 1/2 " in diameter, the sides 8" high extending the octagon to a peak approximately 14-15" from the base. There is a slot on one of the roof sections to allow the ballots to be dropped in. At the outside bottom, which is covered in green felt, is a locked opening which allows the election judges to remove the cast ballots. On the inside of that opening is a hand printed notice " Washington Grove Ballot Box wood from Grove trees sides: maple & oak roof: walnut & cherry hinges found on old box in the woods" A brass plate on one of the sides reads: DESIGNED AND HANDCRAFTED BY SAM DU BOIS JUNE 14, 1975 A small two-inch metal handle is on two opposite sides to accommodate carrying the box. The original detailed plans are in file DT.00F6.10 which is the Town's Elections Collection. The box itself is kept in the Town's archives room and is brought out only for the Town's elections. |
