CLAPPERTON FOR PRESIDENT SIGNS This sign is a rectangular wood board and measures 33" x 7 5/8." It has the words carved or wood burned in it that read: CLAPPERTON FOR PRESIDENT. CLAPPERTON is in a reddish brown color, FOR is done in white,and PRESIDENT is in a dark brown color. It is of unfinished somewhat rough wood. It is presumably a "fun" or "joke" sign. Richmond Clapperton was an influential resident of the Grove whose passion was tennis. Donated by the nis court liner. Donated by the Leng Family TENNIS COURT PROCLAMATION This is a framed version of a Proclamation issued by the Washington Grove Town Council declaring " . . . that the public tennis courts of Washington Grove be dedicated henceforth as 'Clapperton Courts.' " It bears the original signature of Mayor Philip K. Edwards and was signed on September 12, 1976. The entire proclamation, on ivory colored paper, is hand printed in black ink, has a black line four-sided border, and a line drawing of a two-wheeled tennis court liner. The frame is bronze painted wood. A wire hanger is in the back ready for hanging the proclamation. It was delivered to Town Hall November 5, 2015 by Ann Briggs who reported that Joseph Stoltz, friend and attorney for Richmond Clapperton, was donating it to the Town Archives. THE OLD BUCKET BOOBY PRIZE OF THE TENNIS WORLD 1934 donated by the Leng Family This tennis trophy is 15 inches high and is on a wooden base with overall dimensions of 6" x 5 1/4" x 4 1/4" H. The topper -- the male tennis player with racket and ball - stands poised for action on a gold tennis ball. A gold plaque on the wooden base has inscribed: . A sketch of a bucket is drawn under the words. ARISTOCRATIC SCALAWAG BUMS OF AMERICA This 1960 Tennis Trophy is 19" high and the wooden base is a 5 1/4" square. The plaque has RICHMOND B. CLAPPERTON 1960 in white letters on a black background. The cup portion has white letters on a gold and black background. The topper is a male tennis player holding a tennis racket and ball, both items now missing. 1963 TENNIS TROPHY This 1963 Tennis Trophy has a base of a clear plastic 8 1/2" circle with two smaller circles, one clear and one tannish in color. Topping these three circles are three rods of clear plastic ? about 1/2" in diameter and about ...... inches high. These rods support another circle with a topper of a male tennis player. A black engraved plaque is affixed to the bottom circle and reads: RICHMOND B. CLAPPERTON "FIELD MARSHALL" 1963 OLD BUCKET BRIGADE TENNIS BALLS CAN This ball can, still unopened, has a label which reads: THREE CHAMPIONSHIP TENNIS BALLS The can is 7 7/8 inches high and 3 inches in diameter. It was made in Pennsylvania, the "Keystone State," and bears the keystone symbol with the letter P inside. The word Pennsylvania is repeated three times vertically around the can which is now rusty. The gold and blue colors are those of Pennsylvania. |
